My thoughts on E-marketing communication tools

1. How effective do you believe online display advertising is compared to other media and why?
I do not think they are effective anymore. Were they at one time? Yes. However, now they are more annoying and disruptful than anything. Pop-ups? Yeah right! Everyone has a pop-up blocker and settings on their browser to ensure they can peacefully browse the web without getting spamd, pop-ups, or anything else. Compared to traditional media I think that it has perks against some forms, and disadvantages compared to some others. Coupons will always have a place in our newspaper, they are making tv shows about coupon clipping. Mailings are just as much of a waste of time, and so are TV ads. A lot of people have TIVO, or just switch channels between advertisements.

2. Why do you believe "Will It Blend" has been so successful?
I think that "Will it blend" has been so successful because as the author put it, "its like a train-wreck" you can't help yourself but to look. When someone says they are going to do something absurd like blend a rake, or an iphone, your probably going to check it out for yourself because you don't think its possible. It is out there, it is radical, and it was something that no one else had done before. It was successful because people couldn't believe it, and once they did, they told their friends, posted it on their Facebook wall, and let their word of mouth marketing campaign do the rest for them!

3. Name what you believe are the three most important rules for successful e-mail marketing and explain why
1) Give people a reason to look at your ad at the bottom of the email. Flashy bright lights don't count. Be creative, be unique, be appealing, but also be real ( If it is too good to be true, it probably is).
2) Individualize your ads. I do not want to see ads about hair salons. I don't have enough hair to care. I do want to see ads about hunting, fishing, skiing, and deals at bars. Why? Well because I enjoy these things. If i start seeing ads that do not interest me, eventually I am just going to start blocking all ads out. Don't abuse the fact that you have an audience and it is potentially somewhat captive. Do not loose it by having ads that are unrelated to me.
3) Use microsegmentation to send messages to smaller, but more involved groups. Why try to market to 100 % of the market, when realistically only 8% will buy. In addition, that 8% is likely to provide you with 80% of your profits, and the other 92% of the market will provide you with the other 20%. Focus on quality, relevance, reputation and layout rather than reaching everyone who MIGHT be a customer.

Ta ta!
