What I learned from Chapters 6 - 9

Simple Topic

After reading Andy’s book, I truly understand being a marketer need to constantly refresh and bring more fun idea to create the conversations. “People won’t talk about you if you don’t give them something to say.” So the question end up with, “How can I create a topic?” Andy claims that anything that catches attentions is a topic and keeps each topic short and sweet. To be honest, I did not believe that every little interesting thing could catch consumers’ attentions; however, Coca Cola Happiness Machine YouTube video really just blows me away. Recently, Coca Cola also create the Happiness Truck in Brazil. Coca Cola Truck drove different towns in Brazil and use the simple concept to bring people surprise and happiness. The difference between the Coca Cola happiness machine and truck is that people don’t even need to pay for it.

Coca-Cola uses the Word of Mouth Marketing and unexpected event to let people talk about their brand. The connection between Coke and consumer start from giving the sample to make consumer special. Because of the unexpected experience, consumers post the videos, pictures or blogs to share this exciting event and gain the brands awareness in the smart way.

Do Something Silly

I also inspire from Andy’s another principle- “Do Something Silly.” Of course there is a line between silly and stupid, however, I agree with Andy. He said, “Humor may be the best medicine- it’s also a super word of mouth topic.” For example, last year Andes Beer creates the Andes Transportable Robot could let you experience how you could spend quality beer time with your girl friend and best friends at the same time.

Once watching this video, I still don’t know how Andes beer tastes like. But I pretty sure from now every time when I went to the bar will definitely remember this video and want to share with my friends. How amazing that I just use the word of mouth to advertise the products by watching only 2 minutes YouTube video.

After finish reading this book, I got lot ideas and thoughts. Hopefully, I could apply these skills and method to my individual and group projects even though it might be challenge to calculate the ROI. I still believed the organic broad, picture sharing, video sharing and blogs could truly help the companies to understand customers in the long run.
