Blog #12 – Adobe Scene7 2011 Survey: Digital Marketing in the Next Decade (Key Findings, April 2011)

1. What did you learn that is “new” from the survey?

“3-D Visualization” is one of the top planned executions (with a rate of 20%) and, to me, an innovative addition to the array of digital marketing tools. (p. 11) I was unsure what this fresh component specifically entailed and after researching I found some definitive uses:

Product Visualization involves visualization software technology for the viewing and manipulation of 3D models, technical drawing and other related documentation of manufactured components and large assemblies of products. It is a key part of Product Lifecycle Management. Product visualization software typically provides high levels of photorealism so that a product can be viewed before it is actually manufactured. This supports functions ranging from design and styling to sales and marketing. Technical visualization is an important aspect of product development. Originally technical drawings were made by hand, but with the rise of advanced computer graphics the drawing board has been replaced by computer-aided design (CAD). CAD-drawings and models have several advantages over hand-made drawings such as the possibility of 3-D modeling, rapid prototyping and simulation. (www.wikipedia.com)

Imagine a tool that allows you to visualize your ideas and visions before you invest money in building and prototyping. Imagine a tool that can train new employees in your manufacturing business without them having to step on the factory floor. A tool that can market for you, educate for you, and pretty much do anything for you… 3D Visualization has that capability. The power of 3D Visualization in the form still renders, animation, virtual tours, or training can be applied to almost any business or industry. (www.shycon.com/3D-visualization.php)

Though the initial cost may be high, I can see this becoming a money-saving instrument for firm’s online websites. It caters to exact the specifications of the customers without the risks of entering into a binding agreement that falls short of desired expectations. This inventive device could also become the deciding factor for consumers that are now subjected to a world of companies to choose from. And it can be applied to a multitude of industries offering a variety of products and services as opposed to those that focus solely on architecture.

This website http://www.tdci.com/product-configurator/configurator-intro.html gives an idea on how such software can be utilized by a number of firms and it can also be a fun way for customers to interact and engage in the process – making them really feel like they were connected to the planning stages of production just for their individual item. As if they were an essential part of something bigger than them – special.

2. What did you read that sparked an idea for your personal project client and how might that idea be used?

One of the executions with most “very effective ratings” is podcasts which has 32% of respondents rating them “very effective” (p. 12). Jessie O. could have her very own podcast that could center on one or several of her artistic abilities. She could dedicate a segment to painting, baking, and writing, or commit an entire podcast to these crafts separately depending on popularity. Since she already has the necessary supplies and would already be working in these subjects as her lines of work it could be virtually costless.

Additionally, combining this idea with animation, Jessie O. could even have her own “Cuppie” the cupcake series. Each Cuppie “webisode” would be just like her paintings as the viewer would follow this cartoon cupcake visit national landmarks. Depending on the nature of Cuppie & his/her shenanigans, such a cartoon could draw a wide target – much like many cartoons today are made with both kids and their parents in mind to keep everyone at least somewhat entertained. I’m not positive on all of the technical aspects but this seems like something that could be done pretty easily and something that Jessie O., as a digital-day artist, would enjoy doing as well.
