“Cakespy.com is a Dessert Detective Agency dedicated to seeking sweetness (literally) in everyday life. We do this by writing about bakeries, conducting baking experiments, and picking the brains of bakers and food artists, and finding awesome products for lovers of baked goods” (http://www.cakespy.com/about). The Cakespy company is both an online retailer – through the Cakespy website – and offline retailer – at a small store in Capitol Hill. The merchandise available includes paper products, magnets, apparel, kitchenware, handbags, accessories, books, sweets, and more. The goods and services center on a baked goods theme, most often, the products have differing artwork in the form of a personified cartoon cupcake, “Cuppie”, integrated into their design. This artwork has been created by the store’s owner, Jessie O. – baker, illustrator, freelance writer, and entrepreneur. In addition to selling her own art, Jessie O. sells the work of featured artists under the shopping section of her site. Lastly, the interior of the physical retail location also acts as an art gallery. It features small collections from various local artists and is free to partake during the store’s business hours.
I have chosen a focus on the younger generation for my client because Cakespy is a fun and interesting business that uses imaginative methods, – making it inherently kid friendly (plus we all know kids love the sugar rush) – and already shows an initial level of care through its unique and exciting activities that have been tailored to kids’ interests – such as, cook book coloring book pages available online and fun baking recipes and experiments. Through the “Issues and Causes” section of the Yahoo! Directory I researched a couple of different nonprofit organizations dedicated to various social causes that affect today’s youth.
The social causes that came to mind and could be best applied given Cakespy’s area of expertise are bullying (or the new term “bullycide” that’s been created because of the increase in suicide among teens as a result of hostile treatment by classmates), self-expression through art, and reading/literacy. Potential organizations that Cakespy could associate with given the social causes above are:
· Operation Respect: “Don’t Laugh At Me” is a nonprofit organization working to transform school, camps, and organizations focused on children and youth into more compassionate, safe, and respectful environments.
· The National Society of Arts & Letters is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to creating opportunities for young artists.
· First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give disadvantaged children the opportunity to read and own their first new books.
· The Umbrella Project uses the common language of art to empower young people. Dedicated to globally uniting children through creativity.
I thought that since Cakespy owner, Jessie O., is very created and has such a talent for the arts that it could be a neat idea for her to maybe give a group of kids a painting/baking lesson, she could read from her book (depending on the content), or she could conduct/assist the kids in one of her baking experiments. Allowing kids to get their emotions/frustrations out on paper through pen, paint, flour, or what have you, could prove beneficial in their current and future lives. A lot of times kids don’t have access to such forms of self-expressions or stress-relievers and if parents don’t know that there’s an issue than bad situations escalate quickly and quietly. This way, kids wouldn’t necessarily have to come right out and say what’s got them down in their lives but they could still get some relief from any feelings of discontent they have/will have throughout their adolescence.
